The Global Defense Initiative is the most powerful military organization in the world. Created as a peace-keeping force. GDI uses technological supremacy and superior training to stop wars around the world. The threat of GDI military superiority has presented more than one conflict form breaking out.

GDI operates form the Philadelphia, an orbital command center. Their global position has given them tremendous advantage in terms of recruitment--only the best soldiers from the best military units around world are permitted to join GDI ranks. GDI soldiers are fiercely loyal to the cause of world peace and to each other. All wish to remove any trace of the Brotherhood of Nod from the world.

GDI is led by General Solomon, a highly decorated military officer. He monitors GDI activities from his position aboard the Philadelphia. Seen as a figurehead by some. Solomon wields real power in GDI. and GDI troops trust his decision implicitly. The campaign against NOD is headed by commander Michael McNeil, who is uncompromisingly dedicated to GDI, and has a reputation for dong anything necessary to win.
